Having spent best part of a day trying combinations of ram, hdd, optical drive and media source I've came to the conclusion that my ASUS Athlon XP rig is finally dead. After years of issue-free computing an attempted install of Linux seems to have nuked it.

So it looks like I need a new mobo/cpu/memory.

Needs to have:

onboard gfx (or be a pci gfx card cheaper than the rest)

4 or more SATA ports for 2 RAID 1 disk sets. Doesn't need to have RAID though as I could software RAID it since most onboard RAID setups are fake-RAID.

Gigabit network would be a benefit - or have a std PCI slot free.

I thought about using my current PC hardware and buying new for my PC, but it doesn't look like hardware has advaned enough for a budget bundle to be better than my current hardware. Correct?

Appreciate peoples experiece with the budget mobos - stability, driver issues etc.

Hello,

I was in CCL returning some ram the other day and happened across a PC in there. It was a water cooled monster based around a socket 775 asus board with a Q9400 quad core CPU and a GT220. My boss was after a pc so after a quick call and an emptying of my bank into the CCL till I walked out with that plus a Nvidia 460 card (Palit)

Now I dropped it off today and my boss has got it all setup with the 460 and when he is inside a game the GFX card is making odd noises, the tone, frequency and pitch change depending on what is currently been displayed. Once he dumps out of the game back 2D the noises stop. He's put the GT220 back in and it doesn't produce the noises.

Please bear in mind that the symptoms are been described 2nd hand so to speak as I haven't seen the beast turned on.

Any ideas?

Faulty card maybe?

Cheers for any help

Will

so...wifey wants a computer because her laptop cuts off the last little bit of the farmville screen (honestly!).
marc had his pc for sale and i pointed it out to her, but she decided it was too expensive and she'd be ok anyway..blah, blah, blah.

now that PC is sold she realises that farmville is important enough to her to spend money on, bugger feeding the kids and all that crap, so i need to get involved to keep costs low.

as i'm moving out and taking my pc with me (which was gonna have some parts from marcs thrown in if she'd had the sense to buy it together).
so...i dumped my spare parts onto freecycle a while ago, need a fairly low-spec pc capable of running...er...farmville and facebook chat, + monitor etc..., cheap as chips (lcd monitor only though)
advice welcome as always, 2nd hand is certainly an option to keep costs down. OS not required as i still have vista keys from my brief technet subscription...which she will be using for testing purposes only :P

Current system is as follows (built by CCL ~2 years ago):

Gigabyte EP45-DS3 motherboard
Core 2 duo E8500 o'clocked at 3.61 GHz
3GB Corsair XMS2 RAM
Radeon HD4850 512MB graphics card
Windows Vista 32bit Home OS
ASUS 19" monitor (VW series) running at native res of 1440 x 900

The main purpose of upgrading is for the release of FFXIV next month. I've been looking at various options available for upgrading, but can't seem to settle on anything.

Option 1.... Get the best (or better) Quad core processor that my current MB supports. Best is the QX9770, but even second hand these are £300 on ebay. You can forget new prices on one of those, absolutely mind boggling! A new Q9550 perhaps? CCL have these at £250. Or a lower spec Quad core maybe? I've Googled "E8500 versus X Quad" and the arguments tend to go with the E8500. But a lot of those threads are knocking on two years old when games didn't utilise Quad core technology. FFXIV will utilise this of course. I'd need to uppgrade the graphics too to Radeon 5850 or above.

Option 2.... Stick with the dual core and just upgrade the Graphics card to a Radeon 5850 and o'clock it. Cheapest option. Leaves field clear to upgrade further if need be. I feel the 4850 I currently have is the weakest point of the system anyway. But this alone is likely to give little performance boost. Thoughts?

Option 3.... Go for a new build with i5 or i7 processor. Preferably o'clocked to ~4.0 GHz. Of course this will need a new graphics card too. This is the big bucks option. I would also need a new OS as my Vista will be detected as being in a new system. So probably go Windows 7 under this option.

Don't really wanna go with #3 if I can help it for obvious wallet emptying reasons. Part of me feels silly upgrading for one game, but I've put 5.5 years into FFXI. :p So forget the game... how would you upgrade it?

EDIT: I've already set aside ~£200 on a new monitor. That 1440 x 900 display doesn't cut it any more. :)

My current option- is to start of capturing SD footage till i build an audience? i think it is very strategic to do that but different opinions say that Hd is better for building an audience... which i dont belive....
( i will be re-edditing this current option as things go along in this thread so new posters can get and be relivent)

The Current system i have: Samsung R5300, DualCore 2.2ghz, 2gb Ram, 250gb HDD

I would probably like a new system for this, but currently people have said not to if i am capturing Sd to start of with, then cash out when going hd, which i agree too, ass i dont have that much money currently i need to buy a new AV-Reciver(the old one uses to much power, plus it overheats like a bish, aswell as to pay for, my over pending electric bill....

I currently have a 5 year old computer which won't run some of my new high spec games so I am going to build new a computer. I am just not sure what works best and is compatible with what.
My computer now has a 2.8Ghz AMD Athlon processor, WinFast 6150M2MA motherboard, 3GB DDR2 RAM, rubbish graphics card, IDE hard drive and optical drives and I am not sure what power supply and cooling.
I have £600 at the most to spend and am looking for at least 3Ghz processor, 1GB graphics card and a good motherboard and obviously a hard drive and optical drive.
Please be creative, thanks
